      Contaminated tissue dispensers isolated

In North Carolina, inspectors from the Radiation Protection Section checked 29 Bed Bath & Beyond stores for possible contamination in metal tissue dispensers manufactured in India.

State inspectors’ efforts confirmed the presence of low-level radiation in a recent shipment received at one Charlotte area store. The product was isolated safely in storage on Thursday (1/12/2012) awaiting appropriate disposal. The Charlotte outlet has confirmed that none of the contaminated products were sold from that location. Scans of similar product from earlier deliveries to the chain’s other North Carolina outlets indicated no presence of detectable radiation in the Dual Ridge Metal Boutique Tissue Holder (model number DR9M)

Bed Bath & Beyond has posted a brief statement on its website and Facebook page, and in stores, announcing the problem and advising customers who have purchased the items to return them to a Bed Bath & Beyond store for a full refund.

The company has withdrawn the product from online sales and is pulling items from its stores. Other items in the same boutique series, such as lotion dispensers and waste baskets, have also been pulled, though there is no indication of radioactive contamination with any items other than the tissue box holders.

Customers may contact the chain for more information at 1-800-462-3966.

The tissue holder bears SKU 18485524.

The UPC is 8476820004980.
