The primary mission of the North Carolina's Environmental Program is to monitor radiation in the environment.  Routine monitoring is performed at all North Carolina nuclear facilities.  Additionally, a statewide network of monitoring stations is maintained for the purposes of establishing a natural radiation background level.  Finally, several other sites are monitored as well.  "Environmental monitoring" in this case means collecting various types of samples (air particulate, surface water, etc.) at georeferenced locations and analyzing the samples for radioactivity at a lab facility.  Results of these radiochemical analyses are reviewed and analyzed by section personnel and published in reports.

Samples are collected by a combination of Section personnel, city/county employees, and utility personnel.
